God is Speaking

God is Speaking by Cullen Hornaday, Director of Spiritual Formation Words are powerful. They have the power to bless or to wound, to inspire or to discourage, to create or to destroy. In Genesis, God speaks the world into being in six days, “And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.” John’s Gospel begins with “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus is called the “Word of God, the most beautiful, powerful and mysterious…

Youth Group Resumes!

Youth Group Resumes! by Rev. Griffin Phillips, Minister of Youth & Young Adults Well, St. Paul is just getting back into the swing of things with Youth Group and Choir and planning upcoming trips. And I’m just getting into the swing of things with my recent start at the church. I am so excited and so grateful to be here with you all, and I want to share a couple of thoughts with you today. Some people are going through…

Year of Yes

Year of Yes by Rev. Gary Gibson, Senior Pastor Here we are at the beginning of a new year. I’m not sure where 2016 went; it passed rather quickly. The year held significant events for some, while others had a rather routine year. Some of the significant events happened because people said “yes” to exploring new possibilities, to taking a risk or to taking advantage of opportunities presented or created. On the other hand, it was a routine year for…

The Arts at St. Paul Depict the Gift of Christmas

I want to tell you the ultimate story of social justice. 2000 years ago, a King was born. Born in the midst of the most common circumstances. Word of this wonder made its way to kings and peasants. They were all offered equal opportunity to view this child, to feel the wonder, to share in the great hope that they are loved –in equal measure – and that they are offered abundant life. We know this story. It has been…

Dawn is Breaking

Dawn is Breaking By Amy Lee Carpenter, Director of Communications To my knowledge, humanity has never been separated from fear, anger, or loss. The ancestors of our ancestors worried, like we worry,  they have been hurt, like we get hurt. Crack open nearly any page of any history book and there is a story of tragedy, a reality that probably shook our predecessors to the point of quaking and asking “how could this happen?” We face a personal loss or loss of…

Kindness

Kindness By Amy Bishop, Director of Children and Family Ministries Kindness [kahynd-nis], noun the quality of being friendly, generous and considerate a kind act What goes around, comes around. And with kindness this really seems to be true. Research shows that when we give to others it activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust. Altruistic behavior releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help. When…

Uncertain Times

Uncertain Times by Lori Elbert, Worship Assistant I would like to confess that the times we are living in scares the living daylights out of me. When I see the violence and terror that plagues our world, I fear for my children and the world they will inherit. When I look at the places our political system is headed, I worry that things will not go well for our country. When I wake in the middle of the night, sometimes…

Caring for Our Neighbors

Caring for Our Neighbors By Amy Lee Carpenter, Director of Communications We are very excited to announce that we have agreed to sponsor another refugee family here at St. Paul. In conjunction with Kentucky Refugee Ministries, we will be assisting a Syrian family to assimilate into the United States. This Muslim family, consisting of mother, father, and 4 children (all boys; ages: 6, 9, 15, 21) was accepted in the United States Resettlement Program in 2013. They have been living…

Caring for the Present

CARING FOR THE PRESENT by Amy Bishop, Director of Children and Family Ministries Have you ever heard anyone say that children and youth are the future of the church? I would have to say that I disagree, the children and youth are not the future of the church. The children and youth are the church now. They are the church present. According to the Barna Research Group, 64% of adult Christians decided to follow Jesus before the age of 18.…
