The Arts at St. Paul Depict the Gift of Christmas

The Arts at St. Paul Depict the Gift of Christmas

I want to tell you the ultimate story of social justice.

2000 years ago, a King was born. Born in the midst of the most common circumstances. Word of this wonder made its way to kings and peasants. They were all offered equal opportunity to view this child, to feel the wonder, to share in the great hope that they are loved –in equal measure – and that they are offered abundant life.

We know this story. It has been conveyed to the world through storytelling and use of the arts over the centuries: soaring architecture, in dance, by people adorned in the most precious material and jewels, paintings by the masters, by heralds parading through the streets, in humble churches where people gather to join in song. Through literature and the dramatic arts, light passing through beautiful stained glass.

This kind of storytelling over the years has conveyed the magnitude of the gift that was given.

That’s what we do during the Advent and Christmas season. We remember the story, we act it out using the literature we share and the songs we love.  And at St. Paul, we join with the handful of congregations in the U.S. that tell the story through the medieval tradition of the Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. A herald, peasants, hopeful children, obedient Shepherds, reverent and generous Kings, musicians – all on the same journey to that child who sees everyone the same, and told us to do that, too. Children of God. Worthy of love. Able to change the world.

The Festival is a unique musical and theatrical experience depicting Christ’s light coming into the World, and calling us to be that light through service and love.

That’s the message of the story we send with those who attend our Festival. Share the light of God’s love in this world, in equal measure to all.  The foundation of social justice.

We ask that you find a way to support the Festival this year: by volunteering behind the scenes, in the performance, as a supporter through your contributions, and especially by bringing your family and friends to the dinner and performances.
